Types of Berries

For those surprised to discover that a tomato was a berry - here's a more comprehensive list (but not totally complete) of types of berries that are 'true berries':

Acai berry
Banana
Barberry
Capsicum (peppers)
Crowberry
Cranberry
Currant
Elderberry
Goji Berry
Gooseberry
Grape
Lingonberry
Nannyberry
Oregon-grape
Partridge Berry
Serviceberry
Tomato
Watermelon

Citrus fruit (oranges, lemon, grapefruit) are a specific family of berries (hesperidium). Cucumbers, melons, and their relatives are also berries, of the pepo family.

Are you as surprised as I was? I knew tomatoes were fruit, but had no idea that they were berries. And peppers? I didn't even know that they were fruit. And what about bananas? Not a clue!

It just goes to show how different the true botanical definition of something can be from our common understanding.
